2017 will mark the 5th year for this annual event. The Lester River Race is a downriver whitewater kayak race held on the class IV-V Lester River in Duluth, MN. The date of the race is not finalized until conditions allow based on snow melt rates to bring the water level up to a high flow. Generally, this happens in early April, although the late springs of 2013 and 2014 delayed the race into May.
The unique setting of the race course within the city limits of Duluth and with easy access from the Lester River Road, makes this event a great opportunity for spectators, photographers, and families to watch expert paddlers race in the type of whitewater usually only found in remote, inaccessible rivers.
